Known as 'The Windy City,' Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States. With a mixture of beautiful architecture and romantic views along the Lake Michigan waterfront, it is nestled between the Mississippi River watershed and the famous Great Lakes. The city was founded in 1837 but was inhabited by the Potawatomi Native Americans before that time. Today, people travel from all over to see sights such as Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Sears Tower, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Lincoln Park Zoo. The city has had an impressive cultural influence in visual arts, novels, films, comedy, and music like jazz and gospel.
Our 3D wood map of Chicago is skillfully laser-cut from pieces of Baltic birch which are then glued together in the shape of the city's coastline. A bathymetric chart identifies the depths of the Chicago Harbor, and the wood is then cut to form the vibrant beauty and depth of the landscape. Once the 3D wood map's core is complete, an artist hand-stains the water and includes etched points of interest to the map's surface. A solid wood frame and acrylic protective shield provide the finishing touches.
